Learning how to build a concrete fish pond is only useful and elegant for up to a length of five meters in diameter. Any length larger than this will pose a problem in the future for cleaning and maintenance. The floor and sides of the pond should have been molded with a thin concrete shell that is lightly reinforced to ensure that no problems will pose into the depth of the shell. The surrounding soil should have a support shell under it as this will prevent uproot and uneven distribution about the majority of the cement barrier.

The periphery of the pond needs to be sloped away from the concrete shell as this will prove to be very valuable in the life of the pond. It will prevent added pressure and weight from being unevenly distributed upon the cement and decrease the possibility of cracks and tears in the shell. By adding a horizontal rim around the periphery of the pond will prove to add strength reinforcement to prevent caving in from the surrounding soil.

Be sure to deepen the pool enough to support wildlife such as fish. A depth of 450-700 mm should be enough for small fresh-water fish. When doing the prior excavating to laying the concrete, be sure to dig a lining at least 15 mm deep to provide a molding that will be suitable to mold the concrete in a secure fashion. It is suggested to use a ratio of 1:6 parts of cement to sand mixture.

The Idea Behind Learning How to Build a Concrete Fish Pond

The first material that is needed when learning how to build a concrete fish pond is spacer blocks. The recommended amount of material that you will need is 16 blocks. The ratio in constructing these blocks is 1:1 mixture of cement to sand. You will then need a 75 mm nail. Now pour the blocks into a 15x30x30 block formation and lay the 1b blocks approximately 250 mm apart from each other.

The next piece of equipment you will need is to lay two layers of galvanized chicken mesh with approximately 25 mm openings to accommodate for the layer of concrete that was laid previously. Twist the wires at right angles from each other and fix them together with 4 mm thick hooks. This will provide the padding for the pond.

Placing and Curing the Concrete

The steps involved in placing and curing the concrete are not very tedious but do require some knowledge of laying concrete. First place the entire shell continuously, not just in sections. Remove any foreign objects lying within the confines of the shell prior to laying any concrete. Use a trowel to round off the corners of the periphery of the shell as this will provide a nice, round shell when the project is finished.

Press the concrete to mold the shape and remove the hooks as you complete this process as they will not be of use later. Use a wood float for the concrete to provide a rough texture or steel trowel for smooth texture. Cover the pool with plastic sheets after this completion to allow the concrete to cure. Allow a minimum of three days up to seven days for the curing process before filling your concrete fish pond with water for best results. If you are successful, you can now teach others how to build a concrete fish pond.

In order to attract a diverse culture of creatures into their yards, many homeowners are installing a bird pond to attract all sorts of their feathered friends. While many consider them nothing more than an over-sized, in-ground bird bath, an outdoor bird pond can provide valuable benefits while providing the homeowner with the sight of many different species of the flying creatures. While there are some downsides to inviting birds into the yard, there are more than just their beauty and antics that make many appreciate having them around.

One of the negatives often considered when discussing installation of a bird pond is that birds are going to do what they all do on a regular basis. Their droppings around the edge of the pond may not be inviting, as well as the feathers and other waste they leave in and on the water. However, a good filtering system in a bird pond can help keep it clean and reduce any malodorous emanations from wafting up from the water.

There are also some precautions that will need to be taken, especially if there are children nearby. As they will have a natural curiosity to being attracted to the bird pond for a closer glimpse of the bathers, the water should be deep enough to accommodate the birds, but not so deep as to invite the children to join them in a bath.

Think About Safety And Cleanliness When Building Your Pond

One of the items that could be considered a necessity when installing a bird pond is a small fountain or some other means of keeping the water moving. Many use two and three-tier waterfalls to keep the water moving to help keep it clean and to prevent stagnation of the water. Water in a bird pond that does not move tends to turn all types of nasty colors and are usually accompanied by a nasty odor.

Additionally, still water not only invites the birds, it can also be a breeding ground for countless species of flying insects, with possibly the worst being mosquitoes. In most instances, a fountain or working filter will prevent these insects from laying their eggs in the bird pond, but if there is any areas of the pond that do not benefit from the fountain, products to prevent the mosquitoes from laying their eggs will need to be used. Some diseases are carried by these insects that can be deadly to humans and animals and it is best to stop the spread by eliminating any still water in the yard.

If you are considering incorporating a water feature to your back garden, there are a handful of choices to help you in building a pond. There are kits available which include everything you need. Just about all you must do will be dig a hole and, depending on size, you will have a fish pond in action in just several hours.

There are also pond kits available for even larger locations that could call for the use of heavy building gear. If you have the time as well as the equipment you are able to dig your own hole to set up a bigger pond or retain the services of a contractor with experience of constructing a pond and allow them to carry out all the work.

One of the first items to consider when building a pond will be the position. It’s important to be aware that virtually all overhanging trees, including evergreens, will drop leaves or needles into the water. These must be taken out often to limit algal growth and also preserve the ecology of the pond. If you want to add a fountain or waterfall with your pond you will have to have access to an electric power supply close to the pond.

Click Here To Grab Your Copy of “How To Build A Garden Pond”

Fish ponds can end up being as small as couple of feet in diameter and lined simply with durable vinyl sheeting or pond liner. They may also be created completely above ground from bricks or blocks. In this case the interior of the pond is usually painted with a rubberized waterproof solution.

The type and size of pond you ultimately choose is determined by the size of your garden, the amount of room you are able to commit to the pond and the amount of money that you’re prepared to commit.

Finding Creative Ideas For Pond Concepts

Building a pond can be fun, but reaching a decision on exactly what it should look like may take time and some homework. There are many magazines and books that offer style and design suggestions for building a pond and if you are planning to hire a building contractor with experience in pond construction, they should certainly have a lot of design options that you can pick from.

If you have come across a pond that you like you can take a photo to show to the building contractor or even try copying the design on your own. If you consider that building a pond is actually a job that can be done on your own you may still want to do some homework on the appropriate installation of waterfalls, fountains as well as aeration techniques to make sure they are installed correctly.

Don’t forget, if you plan in advance for installing electrical power and an overflow drain, it can be simpler to add them through the construction phase compared with needing to integrate them when the pond is filled with water.

And, finally, make your pond as big as you can since they frequently appear smaller than you pictured when full.

Ponds and outdoor water features are becoming very popular, and many people are looking at do-it-yourself ponds. A beautiful garden pond is easy to design and can be built in a weekend.

What Are The Choices For D-I-Y Ponds

When looking at the available choices for a D-I-Y pond, consider a few essential questions. What area is available for the pond? Certain types of pond will require more space. Koi ponds for example, not only need to be deep, but they also need to be large enough to hold a minimum of 1000 gallons of water. Another consideration is how many hours of sunlight the pond area receives. If your D-I-Y pond will mainly contain aquatic plants, it is important to locate your pond where it will receive maximum sunlight. Some plants require all day sun, while others will happily survive with as little as three to four hours a day.

Click Here To Grab Your Copy of “How To Build A Garden Pond”

Once the area has been selected, design the shape of the pond by laying out a garden hose or string or draw it on the ground with spray paint. One of the best ways to create a D-I-Y pond is to dig the area out and dig a shelf on the outside of the pond about a foot wide. The pond itself can gradually slope down; with shelves or terraces created every few feet. These terraces can be used to place containers of aquatic plants. The outside terrace is used to house the plumbing for the filtration and pump that is required in the pond.

The pond will need a liner. These can be purchased at almost any home improvement store. There are even one piece pre-fabricated liners that can be laid into the ground. It is a good idea to place old blankets underneath the lining to help prevent it being punctured it when the water is put in. Rocks can be used to hold the liner down. Pots are needed to plant the aquatic and marginal plants incorporated into a pond. Floating plants do not need to be potted. Specific plants have different soil needs. Follow directions for planting the water plants for best results.

A filter and pump are two necessary items in D-I-Y ponds. This will help maintain the quality of the pond water, keeping plants and fish healthy. Without a filter and pump the pond will be invaded by algae. Plants will no longer thrive as oxygen is not being circulated throughout the pond.

A feature such as a waterfall can also be added and may be able to use the existing pond pump. Home improvement stores carry easy to install waterfall kits. To finish off the outside of the D-I-Y pond, place rocks and plants around the edge.

Once you’ve decided you want to discover how to make a pond in the garden, there are a couple of choices to help in making the pond. There are make-a-pond kits available that include everything. All you need to do is dig a hole and you’ll have a pond going in a matter of hours, depending on the size. There are also make-a-pond kits for larger pond sizes that may require the use of heavy construction equipment. You can also dig your own hole to make a larger pond or hire a contractor with experience in pond building and let them do all the work.

Some of the things to consider when making a pond is the design and placement, remembering that any overhanging trees, even evergreens, are going to drop leaves or needles into the water and will need to cleared out frequently to protect the ecology of the pond and limit the amount of algal growth. If you are going to install any powered equipment in the water, steps to provide power and to help secure the equipment once installed should be part of the garden ponds design when making a pond.

A pond in the garden can be as small as a three or four-foot diameter hole lined with a pond liner or as elaborate as having a surface area of several hundred square feet. The size you choose will depend on the size of your yard, how much space you are willing to devote to the pond and the amount in your budget available for making the pond.

Finding Ideas For Garden Pond Designs

Finding out how to make a pond can be exciting, but deciding on what it should look like can take some time and some homework. There are many books and magazines that offer design ideas for making a pond and if you are going to hire a contractor with experience in pond construction, they will undoubtedly have several design possibilities that you can choose from.

Perhaps you have visited areas that had ponds installed and liked what they looked like and you can make a sketch to hand to the contractor. If you decide that building a pond is something you can do on your own you may still want to do some research on the proper installation of waterfalls, fountains and aeration techniques to make sure when building a pond they are done correctly.

Remember, if you plan ahead for installing electric lines or drains, it is easier to install them when making a pond than they are to put in after the pond has been filled with water.
